5 Reasons Your Business Website Isn't Getting Enquiries (And How to Fix Them)

Most business owners we speak to have the same experience: they paid for a website, it looks okay, but the phone isn't ringing and the enquiry form sits empty.

The design usually isn't the problem. Here's what actually is.

1. Your Page Loads Too Slowly on Mobile

Over 60% of local business searches happen on mobile. If your site takes longer than 3 seconds to load, most visitors leave before they see a single word you've written.

The biggest culprits:

  • Uncompressed images (a 4MB photo from your phone embedded on the homepage)

  • No caching configured

  • Cheap shared hosting that can't handle traffic spikes

  • Too many third-party scripts (chat widgets, cookie banners, analytics tools all loading at once)

The fix: Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights. Anything below 70 on mobile needs attention. Compress your images, use a CDN, and audit every third-party script.

2. There's No Clear Call to Action Above the Fold

When someone lands on your homepage, they should immediately know: what you do, who you do it for, and what to do next.

"Welcome to our website" is not a call to action. Neither is a generic hero image with no text.

The fix: Your homepage headline should answer "what do you do and for who" in one sentence. Follow it immediately with a button: "Get a Free Quote", "Book a Call", or "See Our Work." Don't make people scroll to find it.

3. Google Can't Find You for the Right Keywords

A beautiful website with no SEO is like a shop with no sign. You exist, but no one knows where to look.

Most local business sites make these mistakes:

  • Title tags that just say the business name (no keywords)

  • No Google Business Profile linked to the site

  • Missing location keywords on service pages

  • No suburb-specific pages for local searches

The fix: Every service page needs a title like "Plumber in Fitzroy Melbourne | [Your Business Name]". Your Google Business Profile should link to your site and have consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across every directory you're listed in.

4. Your Contact Form Has Too Much Friction

Every extra field on a contact form reduces submissions by roughly 10%. Asking for name, email, phone, service type, budget, preferred contact time, and how they heard about you is killing your leads.

The fix: Name, email, and one open message field. That's it. You can qualify them on the call. A lead in your inbox is worth more than a perfect form that nobody fills in.

Also: make your phone number visible on every page, clickable on mobile, and in the header - not buried in the footer.

5. Your Site Has No Social Proof

People don't trust businesses they've never heard of. A first-time visitor needs a reason to believe you're the right choice before they'll hand over their phone number.

What works:

  • Real client testimonials with names and photos (not anonymous quotes)

  • Before/after project examples

  • Google review count and star rating displayed on the site

  • Logos of recognisable clients or industries you've worked with

The fix: Add at least 3 genuine testimonials to your homepage. Embed your Google Reviews widget. Show examples of real work with real results.

The Common Thread

All five of these problems come down to the same thing: the website was built to look good in a presentation, not to convert a visitor who landed from a Google search at 9pm on their phone.

If you're not sure whether your site has these issues, we offer a free website audit for Melbourne businesses. We'll identify exactly what's holding back your enquiries and what it would take to fix it.
