What Hiring a Freelancer Actually Means

Hiring a freelance web designer means one person handles design, build and launch, with no account manager between you and the work and no agency overhead in the quote. It also means limited capacity and a single point of failure. Both sides are below, including the parts that are worse than an agency, because you will find them out anyway.

One Person, Start to Finish

The person who quotes your project designs it, builds it and answers the phone afterwards. Nothing is relayed through an account manager and nothing changes hands after you sign, so a technical question gets a technical answer the same day.

No Agency Overhead in the Quote

An agency price carries an office, a sales team and a project manager before a single line of code. Mine does not, which is why a custom site starts at $999 instead of several thousand for comparable work.

Limited Capacity — the Honest Trade-Off

I take on a small number of projects at a time, so booking is usually two to three weeks out. You get undivided attention once we start, but I cannot absorb a rush job the way a ten-person studio can. I will tell you the real date on the first call.

When an Agency Is the Better Choice

Large multi-team builds, ongoing paid media management and projects needing several specialists working in parallel are genuinely better served by an agency. If that is your project I will say so rather than take it and stretch.

You Own Everything

Domain, hosting account, source files and admin access are in your name from launch day. Built on standard technology, not a proprietary builder, so another developer could take it over tomorrow if you ever wanted them to.

Fifteen Years, Still the Same Number

Based in Doveton and working with Melbourne businesses since long before most of the current studios existed. Clients from years ago still text the same mobile number when they need something changed.

What I Build, and What It Costs

I build three things. A one-page launch site is $999, a full business website of up to ten pages is $2,500, and an online store with products, checkout and inventory is $4,500. Portfolio and creative sites sit at $2,500. Each price is fixed in writing against an agreed scope before any work starts, so the number you approve is the number you pay.

How a Project Actually Runs

A project runs in five stages: a phone call rather than a proposal, a fixed quote written against a scope, content gathered before design starts, design and build with you watching it on a live link, then launch, handover and ongoing support. No pitch deck, and no discovery workshop you get invoiced for. Most business websites take four to six weeks end to end.

01

A phone call, not a proposal

Twenty minutes on what your business does, who you want calling you and what your current site is failing at. If a freelancer is the wrong fit for the project, this is where I say so. There is no charge and no follow-up sequence.

02

A fixed quote against a written scope

You get the page list, what is included, what is not, the price and the start date in writing. The price does not move afterwards unless you ask for something outside that scope — and then you get a number before I build it, never on the final invoice.

03

Content first, design second

We agree the words and the page structure before anything visual exists. Designing around real content instead of placeholder text is the single biggest reason projects here do not need five rounds of revisions. This is also the stage where photography gets sorted, because it is what delays most builds.

04

Design and build, with you seeing it live

You get a working link early rather than a flat mockup, so you can open it on your own phone and click it. Two rounds of revisions on the agreed direction are included. You are talking to the person making the changes, so most are done the same day.

05

Launch, handover, and then still answering

Domain, hosting and admin access go into your name. I walk you through editing your own pages before I disappear. Support runs one to six months depending on the package, and after that you can still email — plenty of clients from years back do.

Where I Work, Honestly

I am based in Doveton, in Melbourne's southeast. That matters less than it used to — most of a project runs over video calls and shared links regardless of postcode — but it does mean I can meet you at your premises if you are anywhere between Dandenong and Berwick, and it means I know the area your customers are searching from.

Beyond the southeast I work across greater Melbourne and interstate at the same fixed prices, with no travel loading. If in-person meetings matter to you and you are two hours away, I will tell you upfront that we will mostly be on calls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why hire a freelance web designer instead of an agency?

With a freelance web designer you talk to the person doing the work. There is no account manager translating your feedback, no junior handed the build after the pitch, and no agency overhead priced into the quote — which is why fixed prices start at $999 rather than several thousand. The honest trade-off is capacity: a freelancer takes fewer projects at once, so booking is usually a couple of weeks out, and very large multi-team builds are better suited to an agency. For a small business site in Melbourne, that trade-off almost always favours going direct.

Who actually does the work on my website?

I do — design, build and launch. Blend Designs is a sole trader business, so the person you speak to on the first call is the person writing the code and the person you email eighteen months later when you need a price changed. Nothing is subcontracted offshore and nothing is handed to someone else after you sign.

How much does a website design cost in Melbourne?

A custom one-page site is $999, a business website of up to ten pages is $2,500, and an online store with checkout and inventory is $4,500. The price is fixed in writing against an agreed scope before any work starts, so it does not move unless you ask for something outside that scope — and then you get a number before I build it, not on the invoice.

How far out are you booked?

Usually two to three weeks, occasionally longer over December and January. I would rather tell you a real start date than take a deposit and let your project sit in a queue. If your deadline is genuinely immovable and I cannot meet it, I will say so on the first call.

What happens if you are unavailable after launch?

A fair question to ask any freelancer, and one most avoid. You own your domain, your hosting account and your source files from launch day — nothing is locked to me. The site is built on standard, widely used technology, so any competent developer can pick it up. That is deliberate: you should stay with me because the work is good, not because leaving is expensive.

How long does it take to design a website?

Two to three weeks for a standard business site once we start, about a week for a single page, and four to eight weeks for an online store. What actually sets the pace is content — text, photographs and logo files. Projects that arrive with those ready finish early, and the ones that stall almost always stall there.

Do you offer ongoing support after launch?

Every package includes post-launch support — one month on Launch, three on Growth, six on Commerce. After that, maintenance is available from $99 a month for updates, backups and monitoring, or you can simply email when you need something and be quoted for it. There is no lock-in contract either way.

Will I be able to update the website myself?

Yes. Every site is built with an admin panel so you can change prices, add services, publish posts and swap photographs without emailing me and waiting. I walk you through it before handover. A site you cannot edit stops being accurate within a year, which is the most expensive problem in this trade.
